This Rooting article is only meant for Xiaomi Redmi 1S smartphone. Using this only any other device may cause severe damage. So better confirm your device from Menu > Settings > About Phone before proceeding further.
Prerequisite:
- Make sure your phone’s battery is charged at least up to 60%.
- A manual backup of your entire phone’s data including contacts, call logs, messages, memos, APN settings, etc. must be done.
- Install USB drivers on your PC.
- Your phone should be running the official stable version of MIUI ROM.
- The Stock MI-Recovery 2.0.1 must be there on your Redmi 1S.
- After rooting, your phone system will not be notified about the new OTA updates.
- Make sure that you have activated the developer options in your phone’s settings.
Steps to Root Xiaomi Redmi 1S:
Method 1: Using MI-Recovery 2.0.1

Procedure:
- Download the update.zip package file in a specific folder on your PC. Do not extract it.
- Using a USB cable, connect your Redmi 1S to a PC and transfer this update.zip file to the internal storage of your phone. Do not place it in any folder.
- Now safely remove the USB cable and disconnect your Redmi 1S from the PC.
- You need to boot your phone into recovery mode now. It can be done by either of the two methods:
- Switch off your Redmi 1S completely until it vibrates. Then press and hold the Volume Up + Power key simultaneously till your phone enters the recovery mode.
OR
- On your phone navigate to the System→Updater app and launch it. Press the menu button and select the Reboot to recovery option. Click on the OK button and your Redmi 1S will automatically boot into recovery mode.
- Note: Touch will not work here in recovery mode. So you need to use Volume keys to navigate up and down. Use the Power button for selection.
- You’ll see three languages. So use volume buttons & navigate to the English language and hit the power button. This will directly take you to the main menu of MI recovery 2.0.1 mode.
- Again use Volume keys and navigate to the Install update.zip to system option. Select it using the Power button. On the next screen press the Yes option to initiate the rooting process.
- The process will complete within 5 seconds. You’ll see a green-colored Update complete icon on your screen.
- Select the Back button using the Power key.
- Then click on the Reboot option. On the next screen click on the Reboot to System option. This will restart your Redmi 1S.
- When your phone starts up, navigate to Settings->Security->Permission. You’ll see that the Root Permission option can be enabled now. Hence, enable it and press OK.
- Finally! Your Xiaomi Redmi 1S has been successfully rooted. If you want to confirm this, install the Root Checker app and launch it. Grant permissions and it’ll show your device is rooted!
Procedure to Unroot Redmi 1S:
- Navigate to Security →Permission and disable the Root Permission option.
- Download the unroot.zip package file on your PC. Rename it as update.zip and place it in your phone’s internal storage. Remember not to extract it.
- Safely disconnect your Redmi 1S from PC.
- Launch Updater app. Press the menu button and select reboot to recovery option.
- As you enter the MI recovery and click on English to confirm your language.
- Similarly, as rooting process, click on Install update.zip to system option. Then press Yes to start the unrooting process.
- Select the Back option using the Power button and click on Reboot to restart your phone.

Method 2: Using the Updater App
Procedure:
- Download the update.zip file from the link given above and transfer it to your phone’s internal storage. Remember no to place it in any folder. Also don’t extract it.
- On your phone navigate to the System > Updater app and launch it. Hit the menu button and click on the Select update package option. As soon as you click on it, you’ll see all your files and folders present on your phone’s internal storage. Just navigate to the update.zip package file which you’ve copied earlier and select it.
- On the next screen select the Update option.
- The updater will ask to back up your data or to start update. Click on Start update (assuming that you’ve backed up everything before).

- When your phone starts up, go to Settings->Security->Permission and enable the Root Permission option.

Use the same procedure as you did for rooting just use the unroot.zip file instead of update.zip (No need to rename the unroot.zip file).
Method 3: Replacing Stock recovery by Philz recovery

- Download both the zip files on your PC. Do not extract them.
- Connect your Redmi 1S to the PC and transfer the update.zip file to your phone’s internal storage. Copy the SuperSu.zip file on your phone’s external SD card.
- Disconnect your phone from the PC by removing the USB cable.
- Then Root your Redmi 1S by using Method 1 given above.
- Navigate to the Updater app and reboot into recovery.
- Well, you have Philz recovery loaded within no time. Note that touch will not work here, so use Volume keys for navigation and power button for selection.
- Using Volume keys navigate to the install zip option and select it using the Power button. On the next screen, select choose zip from sd (sometimes sdcard1) option. Select the SuperSU.zip file using the Power button and hit yes. This will start the flashing process.
- After flashing completes successfully, reboot your Redmi 1S by selecting Reboot system option.
